As well as some staff, you will need volunteers. It is a sad fact that
there is not a huge amount of funding available for staff on
projects like this, so get as many volunteers as you can find work
for. You will likely need somebody to process donations and to
work in the LoT, and somebody skilled in repairs is worth their
weight in gold - look after them and respect their skills, especially
in electrical repairs. Other areas volunteers are useful for include:
marketing and social media, event planning and presenting, data
entry, finances and book keeping.
Training sessions, Workshops or Events
Training, events, workshops or courses are much the same thing,
with subtle differences. A course is usually seen as having 3 or more
trainings on a specific topic. A training can be a single session and
can also be called a workshop, and an event is usually a more passive
workshop. However, many of these terms are interchangeable and
for ease shall be referred to as 'trainings' form now on.
Trainings are an essential part of running a LoT. They have some
important functions such as: demonstrating how to use your items,
bringing people into your LoT to spread the word, giving a space for
socialisation and community-building and to make your community
vibrant.
Below you will find a range of trainings which this project has
developed, but you should also think about what your community
wants too. You will also find some best-practice points as well as
some case studies.
The Libraries of Things project has developed recourses for running
trainings on: wood reuse, furniture upcycling, sewing and mending,
repair cafes and tool maintenance. However, all the information
presented here can be adapted to any other training you develop.
